Keep Going, You Have No Other Choice
I sit and stare at blank, white screens a lot. You know that stare? Where you’re looking at something but you’re not actually seeing it? I do that often, trying to find the “right thing to write about”. It’s annoying honestly. Why don’t ideas just flow from my finger tips like the “pro’s” do? It should be easier than this right? I’m a “creative” aren’t I? I don’t even know what that means honestly. I’m not creative. I’m just willing to put my thoughts on to digital paper. Can’t anyone just do this? Truth is, no they can’t. Hell, I can barely do this, but here I am. Taking the time to hone my craft. Word by word. Line by line. Growing. Working. Improving. I think.
I find that the best way to describe this “hobby” is to take seriously. I let myself be dissuaded by the idea that I’m writer because I compare myself to others. To professionals, that have probably been doing this before I even knew how to use a keyboard. It’s not a fair comparison of course. It’d be like comparing a high school pitcher to a Major Leaguer. Yeah, they do the same thing, but it’s not even on the same planet as far as talent and knowledge. They do however, share the same mission: get the batter out. As a writer, no matter the platform, or place in your career, your job is the same as the pros. Entertain, inform, teach, or simply share. Only difference is maybe some experience and the height of the theoretical “soap box” from which they’re standing on.
It’s an old saying, and I’m sure you’ve seen in it in some Instagram Inspirational quote at some point: if you don’t believe in yourself, then who will? But it’s true more than ever trying to make it as a writer. It’s a industry full of people like me, just trying to make a name for themselves. But if I stop, what does that accomplish? Anything is better than zero. I’m nobody in this “game”. I’m just a guy who thinks a know a few things and would like to share it with others. So I keep going. Building. Learning. Creating. Line by line. Word by word. Every key stroke pushing closer to my goal.
You have to keep going. Staring into that abyss known as “white screen” looking for answers that won’t come. Find what fuels your desire and let it flow through your work. You know? Like the pros do.
I’m always looking for feedback. I’m new to all this so please any advice or comments I’d greatly appreciate. You can find more of me at Destination Driven, the Daily Apex and of course my personal page. Thanks for reading!
